Search That Actually
Filters by Gemstone
By Gemplore Editorial · Published July 10, 2026 · Updated July 15, 2026
Search for "GIA certified" on Etsy's gemstone market pages and the only filters available are price, Star Seller status, shipping, and vintage - nothing for treatment, certification lab, clarity, or origin. That's confirmed directly on Etsy's own category pages, not an assumption. Gemplore's listings carry structured fields for all of those, so buyers can actually filter by what matters gemologically. Etsy still has a vastly larger existing audience, near-zero listing cost, and payment handled on-platform - real advantages Gemplore doesn't have yet.
| Gemplore | Etsy (Gemstone/Jewelry-Supply category) | |
|---|---|---|
| Search & filtering | Filterable by treatment, cert lab, clarity, colour, origin, shape | Generic filters only - price, Star Seller, shipping, vintage |
| Certification handling | 10 labs tracked, certificate numbers required | Free-text listing titles - a claim, not a verified field |
| Listing review | Every listing admin-reviewed before publish | None |
| Seller verification | KYC (ID, or ID + business registration) | Government ID + selfie match, documented high complaint volume around rejections/mismatches |
| Privacy controls | 3 listing visibility levels, incl. blurred/request-access | None - fully public |
| Payment | Off-platform, after WhatsApp contact | On-platform, Etsy Payments |
| Fees | No transaction fee; optional paid promotion packages coming soon | ~10% baseline (listing + transaction + processing), up to ~25% with Offsite Ads |
| Merchandising style | No urgency mechanics, no discount theater | Markdown/urgency pricing observed on gemstone listings (e.g., "73% off") |
| Existing traffic | Pre-launch | ~425M monthly visits site-wide (third-party estimate, not category-specific) |
Ready to list a certified stone the right way?
Start your listing →Search that actually understands a gemstone
This is Etsy's most concretely evidenced gap. On Etsy's gemstone market pages, the only filters available are generic commerce attributes - price, Star Seller, free shipping, ships-from, vintage. There's no way to filter by treatment, certification lab, clarity, origin, or carat weight. Search "GIA certified" and you get a mix of natural stones, lab-grown diamonds, and other claims that live only in free-text titles - unverifiable from the search results themselves. Gemplore's search and filtering is built around the fields that actually matter to a gemstone buyer: 19 treatment types, 10 certification labs, 31 origin countries, and standardized clarity/colour grades, all filterable, all tracked as structured data rather than title text.

Nothing in Etsy's listing structure requires or displays treatment status, and there's no evidence of any pre-listing review - a seller can title a stone without any structural check. Gemplore requires a certificate number from a tracked lab and reviews every listing before it's visible to buyers.
Verification, but a different kind of friction
To be fair to Etsy: it does require identity verification - government ID plus a facial-recognition selfie match - more than eBay does for this category. But that process has generated a high volume of seller complaints about rejected IDs, selfie mismatches, and suspension countdowns with unclear resolution paths. Gemplore's KYC flow is a real design responsibility here too - verification friction is a genuine risk for any platform that requires it, and it's one we're actively designing around rather than assuming we'll avoid it by default.
Cost of selling
Etsy's fees stack: a small per-listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing, and - if a sale is Offsite-Ad-attributed - an additional 12-15%. On a representative $50 sale, that's roughly 10% of the sale gone in baseline fees, rising to around 25% with an ad-attributed sale. Gemplore charges no transaction fee and monetizes through optional paid promotion packages instead - though that isn't the same as "free," since those packages are a real cost for sellers who want them.

Gemstone listings on Etsy showed markdown-and-urgency merchandising during this research - strikethrough pricing, "73% off" banners - a presentation style that sits oddly against how a considered gemstone purchase usually gets evaluated. Gemplore's brand voice deliberately avoids urgency mechanics and discount theater; if that fits how you want your stones presented, it's a real difference, not just a stylistic preference.
Reach - Etsy's real advantage
Etsy's traffic (an estimated ~425M monthly visits site-wide, though not gemstone-category-specific) and near-zero listing cost make it trivially cheap to try. Gemplore, pre-launch, doesn't have that audience yet. If raw discovery volume matters most to you right now, that's a genuine tradeoff.
Source: Similarweb - etsy.com traffic estimateWho Gemplore is better for
- Sellers whose stones are genuinely certified, treatment-disclosed, and want that reflected in structured, filterable data rather than a free-text title
- Buyers who want to search by what actually matters - treatment, clarity, origin, certification - not just price and shipping speed
- Sellers who want their listing reviewed before it goes live
- Anyone who prefers a calm, documentation-forward presentation over discount/urgency merchandising
Who Etsy is better for
- Sellers who want the lowest possible cost to list and test demand
- Sellers who want payment, checkout, and basic buyer protection handled on-platform today
- Anyone who wants access to Etsy's existing, very large buyer base immediately, while Gemplore's demand side is still building
- Sellers whose gemstone items are part of a broader jewelry-making-supply shop, where Etsy's general craft-marketplace audience is already a fit
