Where Loose Gemstones
Actually Get Verified
By Gemplore Editorial · Published July 10, 2026 · Updated July 15, 2026
eBay's Loose Gemstones category is explicitly excluded from eBay's own Authenticity Guarantee program - that's not a claim we're making about eBay, it's on eBay's own policy page. Certification claims in that category are self-reported in listing titles with no platform-side check. Gemplore reviews every gemstone listing before it goes live and tracks certificate numbers against 10 named labs. eBay still has an enormous existing audience, near-zero listing friction, and handles payment end-to-end - three real advantages Gemplore doesn't currently match.
| Gemplore | eBay (Loose Gemstones category) | |
|---|---|---|
| Listing review | Every listing admin-reviewed before publish | None - list instantly |
| Authenticity program coverage | Certificate tracking applies to every listing | Loose Gemstones explicitly excluded from eBay's Authenticity Guarantee |
| Certification handling | 10 labs tracked, certificate numbers required | Self-reported in listing title, unverified |
| Structured gemological data | 19 treatment types, 31 origin countries, clarity/colour grades | Seller-entered filters exist, but nothing verifies them |
| Seller verification | KYC (ID, or ID + business registration) | None specific to gemstones |
| Privacy controls | 3 listing visibility levels, incl. blurred/request-access | None - fully public |
| Payment | Off-platform, after WhatsApp contact | On-platform, integrated checkout |
| Fees | No transaction fee; optional paid promotion packages coming soon | 15% final value fee (Jewelry & Watches) + $0.35 insertion fee after free tier |
| Recourse if a stone is misrepresented | Certificate cross-check + admin review, pre-purchase - no post-purchase guarantee | Money Back Guarantee, post-purchase refund mechanism only |
| Existing traffic | Pre-launch | ~625M monthly visits site-wide (third-party estimate, not category-specific) |
Ready to list a certified stone the right way?
Start your listing →The gap is on eBay's own policy page
eBay operates an Authenticity Guarantee program, built with GIA, for jewelry. Its own eligibility page states plainly that all jewelry categories are eligible except Loose Beads, Loose Gemstones, Jewelry Care, Design & Repair, Jewelry Mixed Lots, Watches, and Parts & Accessories. Even where the program does apply, it doesn't verify a stone's country of origin, and it only covers same-country transactions. That means the exact category most relevant to gem sellers and buyers sits outside eBay's own anti-fraud program entirely. Gemplore's admin-review gate and 10-lab certificate tracking apply to every listing, in the category eBay has chosen not to cover.

On eBay's Loose Gemstones category page, certification is a filterable field populated from whatever the seller types in - a listing citing an obscure lab sits next to one citing GIA with no visible platform check on either the lab's credibility or the certificate number. On Gemplore, a listing's certification is tied to a specific lab from a tracked list of 10, with a certificate number a buyer can independently check against the issuing lab.
Discovery and reach - eBay's real advantage
eBay's scale is not close. Gemstone category listings run into the hundreds of thousands per stone type, and site-wide traffic is estimated in the hundreds of millions of monthly visits. Gemplore, pre-launch, has none of that yet. If you need volume of eyes on a listing today, eBay delivers that in a way no new marketplace can match on day one.

eBay handles payment, shipping labels, and buyer disputes end-to-end - a real structural advantage over Gemplore's current WhatsApp-then-off-platform-payment model. It comes at a cost: eBay's Jewelry & Watches final value fee is 15% up to $5,000, plus a per-order fee, plus potential penalty surcharges if a category's "item not as described" return rate runs high. Gemplore charges no transaction fee and monetizes through optional paid promotion packages instead, but doesn't yet offer the payment infrastructure that comes with eBay's cut.
Source: eBay - Selling feesWho Gemplore is better for
- Sellers whose stones are genuinely certified and tired of being undercut by listings that can't be verified the same way
- Buyers who want to check a certificate number against the actual issuing lab, not just trust a seller-written title
- Sellers who want their listing reviewed by a person before it's visible to buyers
- Anyone who wants a listing experience built around gemological structure rather than generic e-commerce category filters
Who eBay is better for
- Sellers who need instant listing with zero review delay and don't want to wait for approval
- Sellers who want integrated payment, shipping, and dispute handling without coordinating anything directly with a buyer
- Anyone prioritizing reach over curation - eBay's audience size is real and immediate
- Sellers comfortable competing in a fully open marketplace alongside listings of widely varying quality

“Unethical sellers undermine genuine sellers like us who sell only authentic, lab certified gemstones.”
— eBay Community, Jewelry board
“I found a lot of fraud on EBay... All lab grown. And the natural stones are all darker in real life.”
— kknox14, IGS Forums
“I have also bought stones offered as one thing which were actually something else - nice red garnets offered as red spinel, synthetic sapphire offered as pink topaz.”

Moving Your Listings to Gemplore
Gemplore doesn't have a bulk-import tool from eBay today. Moving a listing over means re-entering it through Gemplore's listing wizard - gemological specs, origin, certification, photos - the same as any new listing. We're not going to pretend that's a one-click migration when it isn't.
