Heat-based treatments

Heat Treatment is the most common enhancement in the coloured stone trade, especially for ruby and sapphire. Controlled heating improves colour and clarity by dissolving small inclusions or altering trace elements. It's stable, widely accepted, and doesn't usually carry a steep price penalty versus untreated stones of similar quality, though untreated still commands the higher price.

HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) goes further, combining extreme heat with extreme pressure, most associated with treating diamonds and some other stones to improve colour. It's a more intensive process than standard heat treatment and should always be disclosed as distinct from it.

Diffusion treatments

Surface Diffusion and Beryllium Treatment both introduce trace elements into a stone's surface under heat to change or deepen its colour. Beryllium diffusion in particular can produce colours (certain oranges and yellows in sapphire, for instance) that are rare or nonexistent in untreated stones, which makes disclosure especially important since the "look" itself is partly manufactured. These treatments only affect a thin surface layer, which has real implications if the stone is ever recut or repolished: repolishing can remove the treated layer entirely and change the stone's colour.

Clarity enhancements

A cluster of treatments exist specifically to make inclusions less visible or fill surface-reaching fractures:

- Oiled - the traditional emerald treatment, filling fractures with oil (sometimes resin) to reduce their visibility. Nearly universal in the emerald trade; the real question is degree (minor, moderate, or significant), not whether it happened at all.

- Impregnated and Resin Filled - similar principle, filling porous or fractured material with a stabilising substance, common in opal and turquoise.

- Fracture Filled and Glass Filled - filling visible cracks, sometimes with glass, most associated with lower-clarity rubies. Glass-filled stones require real care in handling (ultrasonic cleaning can damage the fill) and should never be priced like an unfilled stone of comparable colour.

- Laser Drilled - used mainly on diamonds, drilling a microscopic channel to reach and treat or remove an internal inclusion.

Colour and surface treatments

- Irradiated - exposure to radiation to alter colour, common in topaz (blue topaz is almost always irradiated) and some quartz varieties. Regulated and safe once properly processed, but should still be disclosed.

- Dyed, Bleached, Waxed, Stabilized, Smoked, Surface Coating, and Sugar/Acid Treated - this group covers a range of techniques, mostly applied to porous or lower-durability materials (jade, turquoise, some quartz varieties, opal) to introduce, remove, or stabilise colour, or to add a protective/cosmetic surface layer. Individually less common than heat or oiling, but each carries its own care and longevity implications: a waxed or coated stone, for instance, can lose its finish with normal wear.

How to tell if a gemstone has been treated

Beryllium diffusion, irradiation, HPHT and several others leave no visible trace at all, and even the treatments that can show clues (glass fill, dye concentration, laser drill channels) usually need magnification and training to spot with confidence.

1. Ask what treatment a stone has, specifically, not just "is it treated," since the answer is almost always yes in some form.

2. Check the certificate, if one exists. A certificate from a recognised gemological lab should name the treatment explicitly, not leave it to the listing description.

3. Treat an unusually low price as a signal to ask more questions. A stone priced well under the going rate for its species and colour, with no treatment stated, is worth confirming before you buy rather than after.

Does treatment affect a gemstone's value?

Yes, generally. An untreated stone of a given species, colour and clarity typically commands a premium over a treated equivalent, because untreated material is rarer and the colour or clarity occurred naturally. How much of a premium depends on the treatment, the stone, and the market: heat treatment (the most accepted and most common) usually carries the smallest gap, while more invasive treatments like glass filling or dyeing usually carry the largest, because they change more of what you're actually buying.
